Borneo / July 2017

I spent the summer of 2017 travelling around SE Asia, painting wall murals. Here is a time-lapse video of one of the projects. I painted this with Madelene Bülow, and I am very thankful to her for her help, and her calming disposition in times of crisis...

This mural of a rhinoceros hornbill was painted behind the reception desk at a small beach resort near Lundu, in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. Madelene and I were staying there with other volunteers who were helping to get the place open to the public.

Thanks to John and Leo, who own the beach resort, and to Willie, who was project manager during the construction and preparation phase.

PULAU TUBA / JUNE-July 2017

I was given two large walls to paint on the small island of Pulau Tuba, near Langkawi, Malaysia. The owner of the beach resort had no preference as to what I should paint, so I came up with this large abstract, and a family of walruses...

Enormous thanks to Madelene Bülow for her help with the abstract as there is no way I could have got it finished in time, had I been working on it on my own.

sri lanka / october 2016

In 2016 I took a sabbatical from work and went traveling. One of my first projects was to paint a small wall mural at a Buddhist temple in Sigeria, Sri Lanka. This was part of a volunteer programme I was engaged with for six weeks, prior to traveling across India and SE Asia.

The head monk had very specific ideas about what he wanted me to paint, using the limited colours at my disposal. What he wanted is what he got; a monk sitting in the classic meditation pose in a natural setting.

In the end, the head monk was happy, which was a terrific relief.
