High Royds, 2010

In this video I explored some of the history of High Royds hospital in Menston, West Yorkshire. This was a large Victorian psychiatric hospital that had been closed for several years at the time of filming, and was in the process of being turned into luxury flats. The man who is featured in the video is a Leeds resident called Derek Hutchinson, who underwent experimental brain surgery at the hospital in the 1970s. The experience had a lasting traumatic impact on his life. Despite this, he considers himself one of the lucky ones, as others who underwent the same procedure were left in a permanent vegetative state.

The video was displayed as the final piece for my undergraduate degree in art.
